Tunnels

A few weeks ago me, Josh, Josh's friend Baxter, his friend, and Josh's cousin Justin went to the underground tunnels of Columbia, SC. The legend goes that in the late 1800s, early 1900s a guy going to the University of South Carolina found a part of his wall that sounded hollow and after destroying it was led down to a tunnel that went under the city of Columbia. The tunnels were built during the Civil War and were allegedly used to transport goods from one side of the city to the other since the only major bodies of water are small and full of large rocks. We found a tunnel leading up through a stream in Woodlands Park and climbed up through the tunnel. We probably walked about a mile through the tunnels. Part of the tunnel is constructed of bricks and you can tell is manmade and old. There are holes all through it and the ground is made of wood in part of it. Later in the tunnel it turns to a large cement pipe. Unfortunately at this point it is smaller than the brick part and we were forced to bend over as we walked through. This part made me pretty claustrophobic because of the dark, small space that was incredibly humid and hot. But we eventually found the manhole that was open and we climbed up the 30 feet to the surface. AIR! Phew. It was quite the adventure. And while it was pretty tiring and hot at the time, I'm glad we did it.
